CEP Guidelines for College General Education Requirements

1. Minimum Number of Courses: At least fourteen courses for B.A. and B.S. degrees in arts and sciences and twelve for B.S. degrees in engineering will be required in a college's General Education graduation requirement. These will be four-unit, quarter courses.
2. Limts on Overlapping: For B.A. and B.S. degrees in arts and sciences, at least eleven of the General Education courses must lie outside of the requirements specified by one of the student's major departments or programs. For B.S. degrees in engineering, at least nine of the twelve courses must lie outside of the major requirements.
3. Breadth Requirement: For B.A. and B.S. degrees in arts and sciences at least eleven of these fourteen courses, and for B.S. degrees in engineering nine of the twelve courses, must be taken from a minimum of four departments or programs. Courses required by the student's major department or program will not count toward this breadth requirement. The writing program sequence will count as one area outside of the student's major department toward fulfilling this requirement Each Provost's office will be responsible for monitoring the spirit of this requirement as well as its technical compliance. All colleges at UCSD must require graduates to meet minimal requirements in Humanities/Fine Arts, Social Sciences, and Mathematics/Natural Sciences.
4. Writing Requirement: At least five courses (including general education courses and courses in the major) must require writing a paper or papers. [We recommend that next year's CEP establish a mechanism by which the colleges can identify these courses. This writing requirement will be periodically reviewed by the CEP to monitor the effectiveness of this new requirement.]
5. Col1ege Requirements: The individual colleges will still have the option of specifying more than these minimum requirements and/or requiring ,certain course sequences or course distributions. as long as they are consistent with the above four requirements.
[Approved by the Division May 22, 1984; Amended May 25, 1985.]
