REVIEW OF CATALOG COPY

The Committee on Educational Policy (CEP) and the Graduate Council must approve all new undergraduate and graduate academic program submissions to the UCSD General Catalog, as well as any new courses, changes in existing requirements or courses, and deletions which have been submitted after the publication of the last Catalog. Changes in existing requirements or courses, and deletions MUST be submitted to the Academic Senate Office and approved by CEP and/or the Graduate Council before making changes on the Publications tearsheets for the UCSD General Catalog.
In addition, CEP must approve any revisions in the descriptions of academic programs, curricula of various colleges, or any other matter related to academic activities at UCSD.
During the summer, the Chair of the CEP Subcommittee on Undergraduate Courses and the Graduate Council Chair send a jointly-signed memo to all departments asking them to review their course listings. Courses which have not been offered for the last five years and which the department does not plan to offer in the near future must be deleted. It is hoped that the Catalog will provide an accurate reflection of courses students might expect to have available while pursuing their degree at UCSD. Departments or programs must submit course approval forms deleting these courses.
The following policy has been determined by CEP regarding review and approval of changes:
Undergraduate Departmental Programs - All proposals for changes to major or minor requirements must be submitted to CEP for approval. All proposals for elective courses for major or minor programs do NOT need CEP approval. It has been determined that when the CEP Subcommittee on Undergraduate Courses approves a course in a department, approval for this course to be used as an elective in the program is also granted.
Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Programs - All proposals for changes to major or minor requirements for interdisciplinary programs must receive CEP approval. All proposals for additions or deletions to the list of elective courses which may be counted toward interdisciplinary major or minor programs must also be approved by CEP. The reason for the proposed difference between changes in elective courses for departmental and interdisciplinary programs is that, in the past, CEP members have been aware of problems with proposed courses (no longer offered, inappropriate, etc.) or other courses which might be more appropriate for the major or minor program in question.
Graduate Departmental or Interdisciplinary Programs - All proposals for new or changes to existing graduate departmental or interdisciplinary programs must receive Graduate Council approval.
If a department submits its changes on a disk, the changes MUST be underlined in the file and on the hard copy printouts of the revised text areas.
